On March 19, 2016 I decided to redo this shot where you see the Merchandise Mart reflected in the curved face of the Nuveen Building. I had attempted a year before with the Sony NEX7 and it’s 20mm lens. Only this time I took this with my Sony A7ii with the 35mm f/2.8 lens. There are a number of things I learned when doing this. First off, the biggest difference for the better here wasn’t the equipment. It was the environment. The first time I tried this there weren’t nearly so many lights on in the buildings, this helped to add a lot more dimension to the picture. However, the gear did make a big difference. The lens is a sharper Zeiss lens that controls flares I would have gotten from those street lamps. It is so sharp that in some windows I can see individual books on shelves.
Anyways, this is a scene that I get to see often in Chicago. It’s one I will remember for a long time unless there’s some heavy duty demolition and urban redecorating involved.
But, there is an ideal image in my head of this location and this gets me a lot closer to what this location feels and looks like to me. You just have to keep trying some times.
